What Is a Church?

The term “church” implies a living entity. This entity is not merely a building, but a community of people. In the following paragraphs, we will look at what makes it a church, as well as some of its defining qualities. Ultimately, the church is an institution of faith that exists for the benefit of mankind. The Bible calls the church both a congregation and a body. Nevertheless, we should not confuse the two.

It is a living entity

Some decry the church, describing it as an organization. However, organisms require organization to function properly. Amoebas, armadillos, paramecium, and porcupines all possess organizational structures. Likewise, the church must have organization in order to perform tasks and fulfill duties. An organization is essential to a living organism. Here are some reasons why a church must have organization. This will help us understand how to define and evaluate church leadership.

It is a congregation

A congregation is a community of believers who worship together. A local church has officers, usually deacons and elders. Christ, the Head of the Church, is its true leader. Ephesians 1:22-23, Colossians 1:18, and Hebrews 10:19-25 are all references to the true Church. The members of a congregation are called “congregants” when they follow Christ’s teachings. The church has two primary rituals: water baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

It is a group of people

What is the definition of a church? In a simple sense, a church is a group of people who come together to worship God. However, there are some differences between worshipping God and praising God. A church is a group of people who sing songs and praise God. A church is also a group of people who participate in miracles. In the latter case, the people worship God by performing miracles.

It is a building

Nigerians have a way of being humorous, and this is especially true when they have a problem with a church building. They will take the lowest jokes possible, and this includes demolish the building if they violate state laws. In this case, it was a church building, but the state governor wanted it torn down. His reason was that the structure violated the residential master plan of the estate. The state governor, Adejuwon Soyinka, stated that the building was demolished because the state had not approved it. Nonetheless, the building’s owner, Adebola Adeife, did not respond to text messages and phone calls.

It exercises church discipline

Church discipline refers to actions taken by a local church to remove sinners from its community. Church discipline can take the form of forgiveness or excommunication. The goal is the same: to restore the offender to a relationship with God through forgiveness and love. The Belgic Confession of Faith notes that a true church exercises discipline and corrects sins. This action requires both mutual love and repentance on the part of the offender and is always based on the Word of God.

It is a visible representation of the kingdom of God

The kingdom of God is a metaphor for the reign of God. It has specific characteristics and is not exclusive. In Jesus’ teaching and example, the kingdom prioritizes the poor and oppressed. In the same way, the kingdom of God has different characteristics. For example, it is inclusive of all people – the king is the one who gives, not the one who takes away. Moreover, the kingdom of God is not limited to the Jews; it also includes all those who live outside the church.
